Dear LiberianGirl,
Do you see us freeing ourselves, from the narratives written by “people abroad?”
Read a blog post yesterday, with your voice and your name and your face – shoutout to SiM.
Now you speak up and show up and show out
Embracing your power and strength and worth
Do you smile at the men in your rear, who’ve taken back seats to your no longer deniable presence?
Does it not leave you misty eyed, with a fool’s smile?
This burst of fashionistas:
Handcraft accessories and wearable arts
Young girls in lappa suits and country plait braids,
Bombchel bodysuits and Chaya crochets
radiating pride; as if their identities are attached (and perhaps it is)
This mixture of simple joy and Naz Naturals,
Kernel Fresh and coconut oil,
aloe vera and shea butter
manifesting itself as “the glow.”
Do you see us no longer sticking to scripts written for us?
Does it not leave you misty eyed, with a fool’s smile?
A tribe of queens: sharing spotlights and highlights,
no longer chasing the low life,
earning degrees (hey Sylvia),
pushing rights, breaking boundaries,
creating industries, leaving legacies
building networks, impacting lives
Pause. – I saw you fix her crown.
Does this not leave you misty eyed, with a fool’s smile?
