There are many things history has not told us about April,
& I guess it is hidden somewhere between the fingers of history.
Events that birthed crowns of thorns on Mother Liberia,
Fourteen years, she bled, refusing to touch Jesus’ garment.
April 14,1979, the rice riot:
while the citizens protested for the price of rice,
bullets made their way through the bodies of their skins
as a price for asking too much from a government.
April 12, 1980, coup d’etat:
eyes closed,
hearts off,
the crucifixion nails decorated Tolbert’s body like Jesus.
April 2006, trial:
ex-president Charles Taylor pictured himself
before the UN-backed court in Sierra Leone
on charges of crimes against humanity.
April 2007, re-inclusion:
the UN Security Council
lifted their bans on Liberia diamond exports.
Sad, but still in April,
few days after Tolbert’s body had engaged the grave,
thirteen trees uprooted publicly were set on fire on a beach in Monrovia.
Presently,
April is still painting our streets
with symbols of death, battle cries, looting & gunshots.
